Midjourney AI + Element 3D & After Effects VFX Tutorial
AI image generation using software such as DALL E, Midjourney and Stable Diffusion has exploded over the past few weeks and the crew over at Film Riot have come up with a novel way of using it in the VFX pipeline to recreate a scene from Netflix’s The Sandman.
With just a few simple text prompts in Midjourney AI, they were able to generate an intricate gothic cathedral interior. This could then be used as a pseudo matte painting to composite their actor in front of.
They then used pre-fractured models from Element 3D to add exploding debris into the scene to create a disintegration effect.
Like most artists I’m simultaneously excited and frightened by the possibilities of image and video AI, but it seems that Pandora’s Box has already been opened so we might as well embrace it and find ways of integrating it into our workflows like they have done over at Film Riot.
